Why timeshares are a rip off!

September 9th, 2008

You are reading this because you feel that you have been ripped off from your recent purchase of a timeshare. Like many people in the market for great vacations you were looking for the most value for your money. Unfortunately timeshares have become a place for many scammers and other shady people to conduct business. Just a quick look on the Internet and you can see some of the class action lawsuits that are currently underway in America against these operators of timeshares.

Many people have tried and failed to resell their timeshares with little or no success. The reason is simple. There is too much supply and not enough demand. In order to sell your timeshare you would have to list it at a price that is at least 50 to 70% off of the price that you paid for it in the first place. Obviously you cannot resell timeshares for a profit and any salesman that tires to convince you otherwise is just plain lying.

Another point about timeshares that the slick salesmen will try to do is say that you will obtain an actual deed to the property for the week that you own it. Now this is true to an extent. What the salesmen do not tell you is that this deed that you are buying is controlled by the master deed that is owned by the developers and operators of these resorts. So basically your deed has no real tangible value at all. You cannot use it for equity in order to get a loan, you cannot cash out your deed for a profit as mentioned above. So then this deed that these salesmen will try to convince you is worth a lot of money is actually not much worth the paper that it is printed on.

Any person that is willing to pay full retail for a timeshare is sorely mistaken. Sure a timeshare can serve a purpose for some and many see the value of having one at their disposal but eventually you may need to dispose of a timeshare and currently there is really no good way to do this. This is what makes a timeshare such a rip off. Once you have purchased something in America there should be some way of disposing of it in some amicable and legal manner. This is what I call the great timeshare rip off at its best.
